Microneedling

Minimally-Invasive Treatment To Improve Skin Aging and Scarring

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI). A handheld, fine needling device is used to create micro-injuries in the skin for the purpose of skin rejuvenation. The micro-punctures created in the skin trigger the skin’s natural repair processes, stimulating collagen and elastin production. During this procedure, we apply PRF (platelet rich fibrin) so that when the body heals itself from this controlled “injury” it has the power of concentrated growth factors and stem cells to aid in the regeneration of skin cells. The outcome is more youthful and new skin. This procedure is most commonly used to help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, pore size, skin discoloration, and skin texture.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Because the epidermis remains intact, the procedure can be repeated safely and is also suited to regions where deep chemical peels are not typically performed, such as around the eyes and mouth, hands, and chest.

This makes microneedling a preferred treatment for nearly everyone. Fitzpatrick skin types V-VI should consult with our medical team prior to receiving medical grade microneedling (1.5 mm-3 mm) to avoid triggering a pigment response in the skin.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Simply put, microneedling is a method of triggering the repair response of skin. Each puncture of the needle creates a microscopic channel, or empty space.

The skin recognizes this channel as tissue loss and begins to produce collagen and elastin to “fill” the channel. Collagen is the main structural protein in skin responsible for sustaining skin integrity, firmness, and elasticity. The result is an improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. Sometimes, our medical team will combine microneedling with topical formulas or PRF Growth Factor Stem-Cell treatment to help boost results further.

What to Expect During My Microneedling Treatment

  • 15 minutes to an hour treatment, depending upon the area being treated.
  • Deeper microneedling is generally performed with a numbing cream to maximize patient comfort. To begin your treatment for microneedling Washington DC revive-face expert, Dr. Dupont will roll the device over your skin to create tiny punctures. The sensation is often described as feeling “prickly”.
  • Immediately after treatment, your skin may experience redness and minor swelling. These effects generally subside within a day, but can take up to one week to fully resolve. Since your skin is more sensitive following a procedure, it is highly recommended to avoid sun exposure immediately after. Additionally, we advise you to avoid wearing makeup 24-48 hours following the treatment

When Should I Get A Microneedling Treatment Done?

It is best to schedule microneedling sessions during times when sun exposure will be minimal as microneedling will increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Although you may see results after one session, it is generally recommended that microneedling be completed in a series of 3-5 treatments every 4-6 weeks, followed by a maintenance program. Our Washington DC microneedling team will work with you to design a treatment plan specifically for your skin.

Where Should I Get a Microneedling Treatment?

While microneedling can be an effective treatment in improving fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, skin texture, and stretch marks, it is not without risks. If not administered under the right care, it can lead to infection. As a result, it is essential that the procedure is performed by a skincare professional with extensive experience, such as the team at DuPont Institute. We will ensure that your treatment is performed in a sterile environment and that you are provided with proper post-procedure instructions. We can also work with you to create a customized advanced home care regimen to help enhance and maintain results.

Should I Incorporate an at-Home Skincare Regimen?

It is recommended to incorporate an at-home skincare regimen after microneedling; always consult with us for individual at-home advice.

The Microneedling Difference

  • Uses a needle cartridge with 12 or 36 fine pins that can be adjusted from superficial epidermal depths of 0.25 ( for delicate areas around the eyes, for example) to deeper dermal depths of 3mm (e.g., acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks).
  • The micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production to promote skin rejuvenation.
  • Effective for pigmentation and hair loss.
  • Topical numbing cream is required.
  • May involve a short down time of 12-48 hours.
  • These treatments are done monthly, usually in a series of 3-6 treatments.

Nano Needling

Uses the same type of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge encompasses a greater number of microscopic silicone needles (⅓ thickness of hair).

  • The needles separate the cells within the epidermis to allow topical active products (serum infusions) to be pushed into the skin.
  • Benefits include pigmentation reduction, increased cell turnover, skin rejuvenation and an immediate glow.
  • Painless and no downtime
  • Can be done weekly to exfoliate the skin.
