“Well, MonaLisa, MonaLisa, Italian urogyns have named you…..
Is it only cause you’re mighty that they have named you
For that Mona Lisa strength that’s in your style”
Okay, so not the original Nat King Cole version of the song but hopefully not too bad a parody and it made you smile!
This month’s newsletter is about the MonaLisa Touch and why it is a proven workhorse to help rejuvenate vaginal tissue. I will try to simplify what this device is, what it does, and why it is an essential part of my armamentarium to help women restore healthy vaginal tissue.
It is a laser device that was developed in Milan, Italy. Urogynecologists had the brilliant idea of utilizing the same technology used for facial rejuvenation in the vagina. Lo and behold, they discovered that the “southern face” was just as amenable as the “northern face” to laser rejuvenation! It is a safe, FDA approved device and it has been around since 2012.
Simply, it is an office procedure where the specialized probe is gently placed in the vaginal canal and energy is applied in a circumferential pattern along the entire length of the canal. It can also be used externally on the vulva and labia. It takes less than 10 minutes and there is zero to minimal discomfort.
The treatment is a great substitute for vaginal hormone treatment. It does what estrogen does but it doesn’t require frequent application and there are no hormonal risks. Women with vaginal atrophy and symptoms (pain with sex, genital itching, burning, dryness) are candidates. Any woman who wants to avoid vaginal estrogen and women with a history of breast cancer are candidates. It can also be used in women who have dermatological conditions, such as lichen sclerosus.
A number of benefits are achieved with this therapy. Increased lubrication and less pain with sex, less vaginal symptoms of atrophy, and improved blood flow and collagen production. These benefits may help reduce the frequency of urinary tract infections and improve urinary incontinence too. By restoring vaginal health, the vaginal pH normalizes and the normal balance of bacterial flora returns (dominance of lactobacillus).
Just like vaginal estrogen, it is not a permanent treatment and maintenance treatments are typically about once a year. Initial treatment to reverse the atrophy usually involves at least 3 treatments done six weeks apart. Some require additional treatments.
Yes, the use of vaginal hormone prior and after treatments can improve results further.
I have been a pioneer in utilizing regenerative medicine techniques to restore vaginal health and sexual function. Adding platelet rich fibrin (PRF) or platelet rich plasma (PRP) after the procedure can boost the healing and rejuvenation results of the treatment. Some women also opt for additional placements to improve orgasms and get their Mojo back!
No, it does not. Other options would be to utilize a health savings account and you may be able to deduct these medical expenses from your taxes. We also participate in CareCredit services as well.
If you are interested in benefiting from these specialized services, please give us a call to schedule an appointment so that we can customize a plan together that best fits you!
